7 Amazing engineering projects you SHOULD NOT miss out!

We talk a lot about study patterns, reading, and practicing questions. But more often than not, we miss out on the most impactful learning experience that students get out of engineering projects.

Occasionally, our students at Sharpener tell us how they controlled the entire interview with their projects:

Interviewer: I see you don’t have any experience, Howtechnologies, do you think I should test you.

Sharpener student: Sir, I have some amazing projects for you to grill me on!

The interviewer closes his question list and starts discussing his resume and projects!

So in today’s post, we explore the world of technical projects and the immense impact they create. We at Sharpener have repeated this multiple times to our students and have seen the amazing impact it has during interviews. With that experience in mind, here are some really awesome engineering projects that you should pick as an IT student and computer science student. FYI: In case you are not a skilled developer and need help, join Sharpener and learn for free! Or collaborate with another developer on these!

Alright, now onto our list of ideas for engineering projects!

Technical Project Ideas for Engineering Students

E-commerce website projects for students

An E-commerce website is an exceptional project for engineering students. It encompasses learning several technologies, like user experience and database design.

Additionally, one can also learn a lot of integrations using this including payment gateways, website chat support, and several cataloguing solutions. Additionally, it would require setting up an admin platform to manage inventory, orders and other vitals.

Chat application with a smart bot:

An additional benefit is making it feature-rich. Hence, the chat application is a part of the Sharpener curriculum. It can include multiple features like Groups, Media sharing, Away messaging, Templates etc.

A computer science resume should never be without a chat application project. Having a smart chatbot is an icing on the cake. Chatbot setups allow file management understanding for storing and retrieving chat history. Code optimization is amazing in chat applications.

To-do list builder:

This project involves web or app development, database management, and user interface design. UI can be very simple like Google Tasks, or it can be a Kanban Setup like Trello.

Simple

Complex

By creating an efficient and user-friendly To-Do List, students can showcase their software development capabilities. This project equips them with essential skills and they can actually use it themselves for organizing tasks and time management.

Pro-tip: On the resume, attach a to-do list project link that auto-creates an account and creates a task: “Interview (your name) for a Developer position. Nice way to show off! 😃

Expense tracker:

This is one of our most loved projects in Sharpener. All Sharpenerians develop their own app and use it and why not? An expense tracker is not complex to build, but it can be highly feature-rich.

It teaches you cloud storage concepts and different user interface elements. Moreover, it is a good logical challenge and recruiters will be impressed by it!

Geo-location based projects

If you are finding the other projects on this site to be simple, geo-location will take things one level up. Integrations with geo-location open source APIs including those from Google are crucial. There are tons of companies out there that require this and this will match their skill set directly.

You don’t have to necessary build something as complex as Uber. Think of it this way:

  • Beginner: Find my phone app
  • Intermediate: Distance calculator and directions
  • Advanced: Ideal path based on traffic data

This project will be perfect for engineering students, especially when you think of ideal projects for computer science students.

Dynamic for website development

What does every business in the world need? A website!

Our website, www.sharpener.tech is created by a Sharpenerian itself. While creating this, you have to keep in mind SEO factors, page load time, cookies to save sessions and of course basic user authentication factors

Seems too easy? Let’s make things dynamic!

Have a page that connects to a backend setup. Things change on the website as they are changed from the backend. For Sharpener, it's our success stories which we update regularly to reflect our recent students who have cracked amazing jobs, thanks to Sharpener 🙂

Health Monitoring Setup

This is a really cool project and not so difficult one either!

Use integrations from any wearable device and pass the data as tracked (You can start by manual entries) and save it to the cloud. Of course, you would have to authenticate users.

Once done, it's all about data and visuals: Showcase progress, have a social section to follow other people, recommend different things and be all set to have an amazing app!

We will soon be explaining these on our Instagram channel with some more detailed steps. So make sure to follow us on Instagram!

Of course, there are several project ideas for engineering students. Technical projects are the starting point for any interviewer and the above project ideas are really good discussion points. As you embark on these projects, remember that they not only enrich your education but also shape your career prospects.

But do them honestly and go in-depth. You already know that if you are a Sharpenerian, but if not, no worries! Work hard, and prove yourself!
